Aldeburgh is a thriving market town on the Suffolk coast set between a sand and shingle beach and the river Aide. The beach can be tricky to walk along and the closer you are towards to the town the more shingle the beach becomes.

Explore the seafront with its galleries museum and places to eat. Fishing and bathing are popular.

Wildlife and Walks

The beach is surrounded by nature reserves. To the north is RSPBs North Warren which has lapwing, nightingale and wigeon and Orford Ness National Nature Reserve is to the south with its Chinese water deer, marsh harriers and peregrins - the National Trust have more information on the site.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2018 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
