Otherwise known as Gara Rock beach - this is a gorgeous rural and unspoilt beach. The area is excellent for walking and the Gara Rock Retreat is a short walk away for refreshments.

Bathing and enjoying the stunning scenery are a must and the area is popular with walkers. You can also take the ferry to Salcombe to explore its shops and restaurants.

Wildlife and Walks

The beach is on the SW Coast path. Walk South East along the rugged coastline to National Coastwatch’s Prawle Point - where formerly a medieval chapel stood, now a coast guard station, with an interesting visitor centre, stands in its place. Walk north west for the beautiful Salcombe Estuary.

What's tested here?

Water samples are not taken at this beach because it has not been designated as a bathing water and there is no voluntary sampling.
Why isn't this a designated bathing water?

High levels of bacteria in the water can indicate pollution from sewage treatment works or polluted rain water draining from the land.
Where does pollution comes from and how can you help?

Water quality can be reduced for up to 72 hours after heavy rain. Look out for temporary signs at the beach and on our website.

Annual classification

2018 Not tested

What does this mean?

At the end of every bathing season the water quality is classified as either:

Excellent — the highest classification meaning the water is cleanest

Good — generally good water quality

Sufficient — meets minimum standards

Poor — You are advised not to swim. The beach will stay open and an action plan should be in place to improve the water quality.
