A map showing the Redcliffe Bay, Portishead beach stretch plotted on it

Hi everyone, welcome to Recliff Bay a small beach used mainly by local people and owned by the National Trust. It can be slippery to get down to the beach. Please wear sturdy, flat, waterproof shoes or boots. It may be cold and wet, so wrap up warm and bring a warm drink or water (no refreshments nearby). Or it could be hot! Arrive for a safety briefing at 3pm as the estuary can be a bit treacherous if you are not prepared.  Access can be muddy and slippery and a walking stick might help if it has been raining. Please sign up below, so that we can bring appropriate kit.

There is no car park and this is a residential road, so please try to car share, or park on other roads around the area, rather than parking lots of cars all together at or near the meeting spot.

Plenty of buses go from Bristol to Portishead along Nore Road, so hopefully you should be able to get there on public transport. Even on a Sunday!

Bring a pencil and a drink in your own water bottle (re-usable) so we aren't creating more litter.

RE covid 19: Please do not attend if you or any member of your household have symptoms of the coronavirus or are waiting for the results of a PCR test. Or if you or any member of your household is shielding or classed as clinically extremely vulnerable.

The best advice to reduce transmission is still to wear a mask if you can and to bring one with you in case of first aid need. Do wash/sanitise hands frequently and maintain social distancing. Respect that others may have different attitudes to the current risk levels.

If you wish to be informed if there is a notified case of Covid-19 from someone at the event you can activate the NHS Track & Trace app and/or give your name and contact email to the leader on the day. We can only deal with email due to the large number of events taking place.

Volunteers are advised to bring along their own gardening-type gloves, wear them at all times, and use litter pickers we provide. Extra gloves are available but are to be only used if no others have been brought and at own risk of user, as we are unable to guarantee they are 100% virus free when multiple cleans are operating. Gloves are available from Wilko/£1 shops at little cost.

Any litter picking equipment (excluding gloves) given out will be cleaned before and after use with a household disinfectant. Gloves will be washed if it is possible to do so between events, but not always. All volunteers should therefore use an appropriate hand sanitiser for 20 sec at the end of the litter pick. Sanitiser will be available but feel free to bring your own if you have sensitive skin or allergies.

All are directed to c-virus guidance for beach cleans pre-event  https://www.mcsuk.org/what-you-can-do/join-a-beach-clean/volunteer-safety-and-covid19/

Organiser will follow MCS guidance set out to keep volunteers safe https://media.mcsuk.org/documents/Beachclean_Covid19_Guidance_2.pdf

We look forward to seeing you there - Jules and Adam, Sea Champions SW.

Also worth knowing…

What to bring: We’d recommend you pack a rucksack with a few essentials like sunscreen, waterproofs, hand sanitiser, and perhaps some snacks and a drink (in a reusable bottle, of course).

What to wear: If you're picking up litter with your hands it's worth wearing a strong pair of gloves - like gardening gloves - just to make sure you're protected. Sturdy shoes are a must for protection too.

Under 16s: To comply with our insurance, volunteers under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult who will be asked to sign a parental / guardian consent form on the day by the beach clean organiser.
