Minehead Beach - Great British Beach Clean
Join this beach clean to help us stop harmful litter from reaching the ocean and collect vital data that we can use to bring about positive change for our seas.
Come along and help with a mass litter pick of Minehead Beach. This is part of the Marine Conservation Society's Great British Beach Clean and is being run in conjunction with Plastic Free Minehead, The Beach Hotel, Plastic Free Exmoor, Plastic Free Communities in West Somerset, and Somerset Litter Free Coast and Sea.
Starting off at the Beach Hotel, we will walk down the steps directly onto the sandy stretch of beach opposite The Queens Hall and Merlins Amusements, and conduct a detailed survey (counting and weighing) of different types of litter we pick up, so that we can add it to the MCS national database. Following the detailed survey, we will then carry out a general beach clean of Minehead beach, focusing on particular litter hotspot areas. At the end of the beach clean event, we will return back to The Beach Hotel to sort out all of the litter collected, and take it away for recycling / disposing of responsibly.
This event is also a great chance to find out about, share ideas and get involved in the Plastic Free Minehead, Plastic Free Exmoor, Plastic Free Communities in West Somerset and Somerset Litter Free Coast and Sea campaigns.
We will provide litter pickers and sacks for collecting debris.
We recommend that volunteers bring a rucksack with a few essentials like sunscreen, waterproofs and perhaps some snacks and a drink. We also advise volunteers to bring a strong pair of gloves for protection when they are picking up litter.
Beach stretch details
This stretch covers the area from the main public walkway onto the beach, opposite The Queens Hall and Merlins Amusements, to just past the Channel Adventure Centre.
Also worth knowing…
What to bring: We’d recommend you pack a rucksack with a few essentials like sunscreen, waterproofs, hand sanitiser, and perhaps some snacks and a drink (in a reusable bottle, of course).
What to wear: If you're picking up litter with your hands it's worth wearing a strong pair of gloves - like gardening gloves - just to make sure you're protected. Sturdy shoes are a must for protection too.
Under 16s: To comply with our insurance, volunteers under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult who will be asked to sign a parental / guardian consent form on the day by the beach clean organiser.
