Third report of Portuguese Man o War for 2011 received MCS this week
Three Portuguese Men o War were discovered washed up on Gwynver beach near Sennan Cove in Cornwall over the weekend. This is only the third report this year - the other two records were from Devon and Cornwall in July.
Portuguese Man o War are not jellyfish but in fact a floating colony of closely related hydrozoans. They can be dangerous to humans and their powerful sting has caused fatalities elsewhere in the world.
Compared to the large numbers of this species reported from UK beaches in 2007, 2008 & 2009 these three reports suggest a relatively low level of occurrence in the UK this year, but there may be more out there.
