MCS feed event
The Marine Conservation Society hosted the event “Feeding the Fish for the Future- Alternative Choices for Aquafeed” on November 9th 2010 in Edinburgh. The event, kindly sponsored by feed manufacturers EWOS, Skretting and Biomar aimed to explore and discuss the topic of non-marine feed ingredients that could be used to make feed for farmed fish.
With a rapidly growing human population, combined with the fact that we are individually eating more fish, the demand for seafood continues to grow. We know that wild-caught fish is at its maximum limits in terms of what it can provide us. We have to look to aquaculture to fill this increasing need - but many farmed fish rely on a diet of other fish which, at present, are largely wildcaught.
To enable aquaculture to provide more fish in the future it needs to use a range of feed ingredients to grow fish. This event looked at the range, research, benefits and barriers to those ingredients and brought key decision makers together to share ideas for the future.
