Seafood traceability is integral part of top chippies says MCS

 

Three fish and chip shops will compete for the prestigous Good Catch Award at next years National Fish and Chip Awards. All, say MCS, are leading the way when it comes to encouraging their customers to choose more sustainable fish to go with their chips and curry sauce.  

Bay Fish & Chips based in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, Frankies from Brae on the Shetland Islands and Rockfish based in Dartmouth in Devon have all been shortlisted for the award which is supported by MCS and rewards fish and chip shops that have made exceptional efforts to sell and promote sustainable seafood through their business, helping ensure the future health of our fisheries and marine environment.

Samuel Stone, MCS Fisheries Officer, who will be on the final judging panel for the awards which will be announced next year, along with the Marine Stewardship Council, who certify sustainable seafood, says all three are  doing great work in providing a sustainable choice for its customers: "There's now so much more to fish and chips than there ever used to be. It's clear that sustainable seafood and traceability is an integral part of these three businesses. The rotating LCD screens in-store at the Bay  show you the boats that caught your tasty piece of fish! At Frankies, you soon realise that sustainability is high on the agenda with loads of local and sustainable options including mouth watering local mussels. At Rockfish they sell a fantastic range of certified sustainable seafood; great alternative options like lesser known - but superb eating - gurnard and great local favourites like brown crab."

The winner will be announced at a ceremony at London's Lancaster Hotel in January 2013. The National Fish and Chip Awards are organised by seafood authority, Seafish.
