We advise you - the consumer

When it comes to achieving sustainable seafood, the most powerful people are consumers. The influence of your buying decisions ripple through the rest of the seafood chain, right down to which fish are taken from the sea. So at MCS we provide free information on the issue and a range of tools to help consumers make a sustainable seafood choice. MCS assesses over 150 different species available to the UK consumer, and lists these on our Fishonline website, enabling you to find out just how environmentally sustainable your fish supper is.

Properly sourced and tagged, farmed salmon. Jonah's Fishmongers Aberystwyth.

We also provide information on species' seasonality, translations of common seafood names into four different languages, and much more. We don’t expect you to keep all of this information in your head when buying seafood, so MCS provides the UK's only Pocket Good Fish Guide, listing which fish to eat and those we should give a miss. You can always look at our supermarket survey to find out which retailer is stepping up to the sustainability challenge.
