Radio 1 beach clean volunteers love the litter

MCS says it was delighted with the response  from  students in North Wales who collected  79  bags of rubbish off a beach near  Abersoch  as part of a innovative volunteering project with BBC  Radio 1.

50 students from Bangor University offered to do the beach clean in return for tickets to the Radio 1 Big Weekend.  It was the first time the station  had encouraged students to get involved with volunteering  and their choice of MCS as a partner went  down well with the volunteer beach cleaners.

Dr Sue Kinsey from MCS  says the enthusiasm of the students was fantastic and  the subsequent beach sculptures they made to  represent what they had been doing during the event were amazing.

Aled Jones from the Chris Moyles show spent the day on the beach with Sue and the students. He spoke  to the volunteers after the event who all  agreed  they would do the same  again even if tickets to the Big Weekend weren’t involved!  A new generation of beach cleaners has been born!

Sue Kinsey and Aled expalin the plan                              What a load of rubbish! 320kg of bags of litter

Some of the rubbish gethered at the end of the clean. Sue Kinsey thanks the students for their hard work
