What is Beachwatch?
“The Marine Conservation Society has published a beautiful-looking report that contains some extremely concerning results. Do take a look at the results of its annual Beachwatch event.” Bill Bryson, author and litter activist, May 2011 |
MCS Beachwatch is our coastal environmental initiative, involving local individuals, groups and communities in caring for their coastal environment. Beachwatch Big Weekend is now in its 18th year with thousands of volunteers taking part every year, making it the most influential fight against marine litter in the UK.
The annual event takes place on the third weekend of September every year and the data collected is used for the annual MCS Beachwatch Big Weekend report.
You can survey beaches with us four times a year, giving us a better picture of just what washes up on our shores and when.

Beachwatch Big Weekend 2011 was on the 17th and 18th September. Beachwatch Big Weekend 2012 is on 15th and 16th September. If you would like to register for this event or surveys throughout the year please register now to take part.

Why is beach cleaning so important?
Some of our best-loved marine wildlife is under threat from the waste and litter in our seas. Hundreds of species of marine wildlife accidentally eat or become tangled up in litter. In addition to harming wildlife, litter on our beaches is hazardous to people.
We all have a part to play in turning the tide on litter.
