Working with you
The Welsh MCS programme has been up and running since 2006, with the aim of raising the profile of our wonderful Welsh seas. Since that time, volunteer numbers have almost doubled, we have piloted the new Sea Champions volunteer programme, and doubled the Welsh team with the recruitment of a Welsh Projects Officer in May 2011.
After successfully campaigning for the Marine and Coastal Access Act for England and Wales, we continue to lobby Welsh Government. We want to ensure that it makes the most of its new powers and fully commits to the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity this legislation gives, in ensuring the marine environment getsthe protection it desperately needs.
The Welsh Officers have a programme dedicated to getting out and about in Wales, to meet and talk to people about our campaigns and discuss any concerns they may have. We have seen lots more people volunteer for Beachwatch, and the data collected has been used as evidence to the Welsh Assembly Government which influenced its decision to levy a carrier bag charge in Wales. There has also been massive support throughout Wales for our Your Seas Your Voice campaign.
We still have lots to do in Wales with the new Marine Conservation Zones programme, developing a strategy for marine litter with Welsh Government, promoting sustainable inshore fisheries, and much more.
