MCS' first Welsh Sea Champions hold successful first event

Our first Welsh Sea Champions have held a really successful first event in North Wales mixing art and beach cleaning!

Jacki Clark said almost 70 people attended the beach clean at Porth Neigwl, which ended with people turning the rubbish they found into sea monsters!

"We managed to collect over 100  rubbish bags on the day  and the same volume in large plastic waste and rope debris. Worryingly, there were several syringes amongst the litter. Our best finds were a slab of candle wax, two green toy soldiers, a yellow dragon’s wing, an oxygen tank and what we suspect to be WW2 bullet casing!"

Apart from Jacki, the other  Sea Champions who helped at the event were were Jo Quinney, Em Cunningham, Eirian Jones and  Katie Ratcliffe.

"It was lovely to see so many groups getting together to achieve a common goal. At the end of the clean three of the groups created ‘sea monsters’ out of some of the rubbish collected. There was a pteradactyl, a sea dragon and a cheerful looking chappie with a blue face. We had some great some great prizes donated  which were given to the group who collected the most litter, found the most interesting object and  created the best sculpture," said Jacki.

Thanks go to Endeavour Club, Bangor University, Keep Wales Tidy, Penrallt Coast Care (Pete Wilkinson), and Firmhelm and Partington Marine of Pwllheli.
