UK beaches and seas to benefit from funds raised by players of People's Postcode Lottery
We are pleased to announce that players of People’s Postcode Lottery will continue to fund two of our most important activities throughout 2015.
MCS is among hundreds of charities sharing in a £5 million funding boost from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Since receiving £200,000 in 2015, we have also received a further £50,000 to help us clean up more beaches and promote sustainable seafood to even wider audience. The good news came at the organisation’s Charity Gala held in Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms in January, where MCS was represented by Chief Executive Sam Fanshawe and Head of Fundraising, Ian Fraser. The Gala event featured First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon MSP as its guest of honour.
With the funding of £250,000, we'll be getting many thousands more volunteers out on local beaches cleaning up rubbish and finding out where the material comes from so that it can be stopped at source. And our sustainable seafood advice will be seen far and wide, with new advice guides and mobile phone apps made for shoppers to take to the supermarket or fish and chip shop, giving them the power to choose the most sustainable seafood.
MCS supporter, TV adventurer and presenter - Kate Humble - sums up what this means to our seas: “The Marine Conservation Society is doing fantastic work to ensure that our coastline, our beaches and our seas can be enjoyed for generations to come, and most importantly can remain thriving habitats for some of the most wonderful wildlife we have. Support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery will be invaluable in helping the Society to keep our seas fit for all life, and for all of us.”
Kate continues: “The thing that concerns me most is that so many people simply refuse to accept that the sea is not a bottomless resource of fish, that things can be dumped in it and will somehow magically disappear, that it can continue to be exploited the way it is now, with no ill-effects. This absolutely has to change”.
