RAISE YOUR GLASS AS SCOTTISH MARINE CONSERVATION GETS A BOOST FROM ‘THE WATER OF LIFE’

Bowmore Single Malt pledges to raise thousands in support of the Marine Conservation Society

Bowmore Single Malt, one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, which heavily relies on the natural environment to achieve it’s distinctive flavours, has joined forces with the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) to help ensure the future of Scottish seas.

MCS is the charity working for the protection of the UK’s seas, shores and wildlife. Bowmore’s renowned Single Malt is aged in vaults on the island of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, who’s walls are pounded by the waves of the Atlantic as the sea spray is blown inland to the peaty soil giving Bowmore it’s distinctive taste.

The partnership between Bowmore and the Marine Conservation Society looks set to raise at least £10,000 for MCS’s Scottish projects. Bowmore requires clean coastal waters for it’s whisky production and MCS works to protects Scottish seas to allow marine wildlife to flourish and industry that relies on healthy seas to continue.

The money raised by Bowmore will go towards a number of MCS projects including ‘Beachwatch’ which highlights the dangers of marine and beach litter and ‘Your Seas Your Voice’, it’s campaign for a network of Marine Protected Zones around Scotland.

MCS celebrates ten years in Scotland in 2010, and although Bowmore has been producing whisky on Islay since 1779, both have the future conservation of the seas around Scotland at their heart.

The distinctive taste of the Bowmore Single Malt is achieved when the Gulf Stream clashes with winter gales that drive the sea salt spray inland onto the peaty soil. Without the amazing clean seas around the Inner Hebrides, the taste of Bowmore could be very different.

Kirsteen Beeston, Marketing Manager at Bowmore says: “Clean water is vital to the production of Single Malt Whisky and clean coastal water is something MCS is working hard for. Our similar values mean we’re delighted to be partnered with the Marine Conservation Society.”

£1.00 will be donated by Bowmore to MCS every time a customer signs up to a new ‘inner core’ membership scheme. Bowmore will also add an ‘opt-in’ option to the point of sale section on their website allowing customers purchasing online, to donate £2.00 to MCS. Find out  more here and use the code 99F8193C to join the Inner Core scheme.

MCS Scottish Conservation Manager, Calum Duncan says: “Bowmore is a prestige product that relies upon a healthy environment for its quality. Our seas provide us with food, energy and fun, so it is in all our interests to properly protect them and, where damaged, help them recover. A network of Marine Protected Areas that really work is key to this recovery. We look forward, with the support of Bowmore, to helping make Scotland’s seas fit for life.”

Katharine Moore MCS Corporate Fundraiser says they’re thrilled to have Bowmore’s support. “Their enthusiasm and passion for the marine environment means that the new partnership will help support our ongoing projects in both Scottish and UK seas. Clean water is key to Bowmore’s distilling process and that is why MCS’s Beachwatch litter campaign caught their eye when they were considering a project to support. At the heart of our Beachwatch programme are thousands of volunteers who clean our beaches of litter all year round. We’re really looking forward to a long and successful partnership.”
