SEMPORNA ISLANDS PARK

Management goal: to protect and conserve the natural features, habitats and species of the Semporna Islands Park whilst providing for ecologically sustainable use of the area and its resources.

Objective 1: Protect, maintain and enhance biodiversity, the quality of the environment and ecosystem function.

Actions

  • Ensure conservation is a high priority in all parts of the park, including those set aside for sustainable use.
  • Protect and maintain the integrity of representative, vulnerable, rare and/or key marine and terrestrial habitats and their communities.
  • Protect and manage populations of rare, endangered, endemic and/or key species.
  • Promote recovery and natural re-colonisation of disturbed and/or degraded sites by removing threats and providing the best conditions for these processes to succeed.
  • Rehabilitate selected sites using low-cost techniques.
  • Develop strategies for dealing with natural ecological disturbances (e.g. crown-of-thorns starfish, sponge infestation, coral bleaching).
  • Maintain a healthy, unpolluted environment.
  • Maintain the aesthetic qualities of the islands and reefs.

Objective 2: Maximise opportunities for economic development and ecologically sustainable use of the area and its resources.

Actions

  • Review options and develop appropriate strategies for sustainable use.
  • Introduce measures to halt the current over-exploitation of both terrestrial and marine species and ensure future use is sustainable.
  • Introduce measures to prevent further environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity caused by human activities.
  • Develop plans to promote recovery of species and habitats of commercial importance or economic benefit.
  • Ensure that all future activities are properly managed and do not conflict with each other or with the conservation objectives for the park.
  • Create or develop alternative activities and livelihoods which take pressure off the area's natural resources, in consultation with the local community

Objective 3. Ensure the local community are involved in, and benefit from, the development of the Park.

Actions

  • Establish and maintain a local community forum to ensure that people can participate in discussions and planning for the park and its management.
  • Ensure jobs are fairly spread amongst the local community and boost the local economy.

  • Maintain and promote cultural and social values.

Objective 4. Build community and public awareness about the importance of establishing the Park.

Actions

  • Develop and maintain an awareness and education programme aimed at all sectors - (e.g. local government, private sector, local community, schools).
  • Develop a research and monitoring programme to address key management issues and support the educational initiatives.
  • Ensure mechanisms are in place to gauge the success of the educational and research programmes.
