Canadian Sailor All-at-sea For UK Marine Charity

9th April 2010

A Ross-on-Wye based marine charity is set to get a cash boost from a Canadian sailor who is circumnavigating the UK to raise funds for their projects and collect coastal data at the same time .

Jack Lee, a bond analyst, set sail from St Katherine’s Docks in London over the Easter weekend and expects to complete the 3,000Nm journey round Great Britain in early July. He’s already raised almost £2,000 for the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and hopes to significantly increase that amount as people follow his journey via the internet.

Tori Williams, Fundraising Assistant at MCS, which is based at Wolf Business Park in the town, says she’s thrilled Jack has chosen MCS and delighted that he’ll be able to pass on information relating to the marine life he sees during his challenge.

Jack, who’s also supporting the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Quebec, says sailing is in his blood: “Sailing is something I have been around since childhood, first as a recreational sailor, and later, in a more challenging and competitive role. Lately, I‘ve been looking for the opportunity to merge my passion for being out on the water with an inspiring cause. Raising much needed funding and awareness for MCS goes some way to achieve this goal.”

“The UK offers some spectacular and physically challenging sailing, as well as some of the most beautiful and diverse scenery on offer. When taking on the idea, I wanted something that would be a challenge and something that wasn't just a walk in the park.”
“I’m fascinated with Sharks! Which is why when MCS asked me to document marine wildlife, including a resurgence of Basking Sharks in British waters, I was thrilled to get involved.”

Jack will raise cash for both MCS in the UK and the Quebec Heart & Stroke Foundation; both causes he says are very relevant to his life.

“The incredible work that the Marine Conservation Society is doing to establish marine protected areas, stop over fishing and clean up Britain’s beaches was a major reason behind my choice to raise money for them. My choice of the Heart & Stroke Foundation was predominantly based on its ground-breaking work with children to promote a Healthy Heart & Healthy Living. ”

Tori Williams says she hopes Jack’s fundraising exploits will inspire others to use the sea and coast as way of raising money for MCS, the UK charity that looks after seas, shores and wildlife “Jack’s challenge is inspiring and he’s accepting sponsorship via his online giving page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/SailBritain All the donations made in the UK will only go to MCS. You can follow Jack’s progress around the UK at www.sailbritian.org or get regular up dates from the MCS Face book page.”

Tori say if you’re inspired by Jack to take on your own fundraising project, then The MCS Coastal Challenge could be for you! You can find out more by contacting Tori at fundraising@mcsuk.org or read more about fundraising at www.mcsuk.org
