Marine Protected Areas

About MCZs in English seas

Our seas have long suffered from a lack of protection. A new kind of marine protected area - a "Marine Conservation Zone" - was made possible by legislation in 2009 to begin to address this.

After a consultative exercise, and on the advice of a group of scientists, 127 areas in English (and offshore Welsh) waters were put forward to create a network of sites. Government chose to consult on these sites in more detail, and 27 sites resulted after a first tranche consultation in 2013.

23 sites were consulted on in Spring 2015 as a second tranche (37 had been considered). Every one of these has now gone through to be designated as a new marine conservation zone.

What YOU can do now

There are no actions to support designation of MCZs in English seas at present, but you can take part in consultations in Northern Ireland and in Wales right now.

23 new Marine Conservation Zones in English Seas

A very big thank you to all of you who took part in the MCZ consultation for England in 2015. 4,789 of you responded in favour of protecting the 23 places under consultation.

We are pleased to report that this action has helped bring about the designation of every single one of the sites as new marine conservation zones! This brings the total number of MCZs to 50. They now have a real chance of being better protected in future.

This is not the end of the story - a third tranche will be considered in future, and management measures for these sites are yet to be devised. Sign up for our Enews to keep up to date with the next steps.

The map below shows which sites are now designated as Marine Conservation Zones in English waters. You can read about each of the 23 new sites by clicking on the links below the map.
