saving planet earth green turtle race

The race is on!

To celebrate the launch of the groundbreaking BBC Saving Planet Earth series, MCS invites you to enter our Green Turtle Race Competiton and win a fabulous MCS adopt a turtle prize.

In June 2007 we attached satellite transmitter tags to the following 4 female green turtles after they had nested at Rekawa on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Click on the turtles' pictures below to track their progress.

Daisy: Daisy was quick to go back to sea after being satellite tagged in 2007 - has she got a long journey ahead? Her tag was sponsored by The Deep Aquarium in Hull.

Zahra: Zahra was the smallest turtle to be tagged in 2007 - does size matter? Her tag was sponsored by the Blue Reef Aquarium, Tynemouth.
Latest: We are no longer accepting estimates for Zahra. Her tag stopped transmitting on 25.08.07. She migrated only 22km to her foraging ground at Usangoda.

Lokki: Lokki was the biggest turtle we satellite tagged in 2007 - will she go further than the rest? Her tag was sponsored by the Marine Conservation Society.

Malini Fonseka: Malini was very calm during her tagging and then made her way back to sea very slowly - can she make the distance? Her tag was sponsored by the University of Exeter.
Latest: We are no longer accepting estimates for Malini. Her tag stopped transmitting on 20.08.08. She migrated a straight line distance of 353km to her foraging grounds in the Gulf of Mannar.

This is part of our exciting MCS conservation and research project Turtle Track Sri Lanka, which started last year when we attached 6 tags to female green turtles at Rekawa. After completing their nesting season, they migrated between 71kms and 1,137kms to their feeding grounds before their tags stopped transmitting.

Green Turtle Race Competition

Complete the online entry form below and choose a turtle, stating your estimate of its straight-line migration distance before the turtle’s tag ceases transmission. The entrants guessing the closest migration estimates for each turtle will win a MCS adopt a turtle prize. Check out the 2006 turtles to help you guess how far the 2007 turtles might travel. Good luck!
