The annual MCS Good Beach Guide aims to stop the dumping of raw sewage at sea by promoting beaches with the best water quality. Each year we identify beaches still suffering from unsatisfactory sewage discharges, and apply the UK's toughest water quality standards to recommend beaches that we think are now clean enough for swimming. In 2000 MCS recommended 200 UK beaches. In 2006 we are proud to recommend 505 beaches, recognizing the effort and investment that's gone into cleaning up our coast.
Remember, the fight's not over yet. Almost 40% of the beaches in the Good Beach Guide 2006 still do not meet MCS water quality standards. Give us your support and visit http://www.goodbeachguide.co.uk/ for a list of our MCS Recommended beaches. The guide will also give you detailed information on 1200 UK and Republic of Ireland beaches, including water quality, sewage discharge (if any), local amenities, lifeguards, emergency facilities, dog access, parking, walks & wildlife, local transport, an OS map and a photo for each beach.
In 2006, http://www.goodbeachguide.co.uk/ was placed 3rd in The Times list of 100 Best Travel Websites.
