School Lecture Programme (2002):
Five of the seven marine turtle species still nest on Sri Lanka's beaches. With support from MCS the Turtle Conservation Project (TCP) has taken the message of turtle conservation into schools along the south and west coast of this Indian Ocean Island. The TCP is ensuring that the next generation of Sri Lankans fully appreciate the value of their marine heritage. The TCP promotes local responsibility by nurturing a culture of conservation awareness among the younger generation.

Tsunami Recovery Programme (2004 and 2005): The TCF originally made a grant to the TCP in 2004 to fund the reform of the badly-managed marine turtle hatcheries along the west coast of the island.  These businesses were set up primarily as tourist attractions and as a result of poor management practices were not effectively contributing to marine turtle conservation. However, the events of the 24th of December 2004 meant that priorities had to be changed and this small grant, as well as an additional £10,000 raised through an MCS appeal by turtle adopters and MCS members, was used for recovery efforts after the devastating tsunami. In 2006 MCS worked with the TCP again on an exciting new project called Turtle Track Sri Lanka, click here to find out more.
