Can you make a mosaic? Mosaic is a fun way for anyone to create a stunning image using whatever materials you have available. Mosaics are usually made using small glass or clay tiles, but you can use anything! Because turtles have scales and their shells are made up of a number of pieces, called scutes, they are ideal for mosaic-making. Click here to download the pieces you will need to make this fun mosaic turtle (a .pdf document will open in new window).
You can use whatever you have at home to make mosaics, but you could colour or paint pieces of card or paper and then cut them up to make your mosaic tiles. You could also use things like dried beans, buttons or dry pasta shapes.
You will also need: Some glue (wood glue is best if you are going to use heavier pieces) and a strong bit of card to glue your mosaic to. You might like to look for a picture of an underwater scene in a magazine, or draw your own, to make a watery background for your turtle.
Instructions: First draw an outline of a turtle on the strong card to help you get the mosaic pieces in the right shape. Before getting all gluey, you should plan your mosaic by laying out all the pieces in the position you are going to glue them inside the outline. Once you know what you are doing you can then glue your mosaic onto the strong card.
Happy mosaic making!
