Tourists watch ASF research at a nesting leatherback turtle, Gabon (C) ASF
TCF-funded in 2004 and 2005

Marine turtle research, conservation and eco-tourism capacity building in Pongara, Gabon: Gabon is home to one of the largest leatherback rookeries in the world. Some of these nesting beaches lie within Pongara National Park where Aventures Sans Frontieres (ASF) established a turtle conservation project in 1996. Uncontrolled tourism within the park threatens to disturb nesting females and disorientate emerging hatchlings. With MCS support, ASF were able to build on their ongoing efforts and establish a tourism awareness and management programme to reduce the threat posed by the local tourism industry.
