Surveying turtle nesting beaches and capacity building (2004): Little was known about the marine turtle populations nesting on Syria's beaches. With MCS support, ARCHELON sent researcher Alan Rees to train and work with staff from Tishreen University and the Department of Fisheries. During 2004 they patrolled Syria's most important turtle nesting beaches and identified Latakia Beach as one of the most important green turtle rookeries in the Mediterranean. The beach patrols also surveyed for stranded turtles and identified bycatch amongst Syria's fisheries as a significant source of mortality for the endangered green turtle population in the Mediterannean. MCS supported this project again in 2005/2006 to ensure that the work continued. For more information about this project, click here.
