Welcome to the webpages of TURTLE TRACK SRI LANKA, an exciting project that featured in the BBC flagship series Saving Planet Earth in summer 2007, with TV presenter Saira Khan finding out about marine turtle conservation and research in Sri Lanka.
As part of our Marine Turtle Conservation Programme (MTCP), in 2006 and 2007 MCS and project partners the Turtle Conservation Project (TCP) attached 10 satellite transmitters to endangered female green turtles after they had nested at Rekawa Sanctuary on the south coast of Sri Lanka. For the first time we have been able to track Sri Lanka's green turtles along their migration routes to their distant foraging grounds and have identified the other countries in the region that must be engaged in the conservation of these spectacular and endangered animals.
This international collaboration also included local partners the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC), as well as the University of Exeter and Seaturtle.org. The 2006 project was a contribution to the IOSEA Marine Turtle MoU and its Year of the Turtle 2006 campaign.
