minicoy of the lakshadweep islands

The Lakshadweep Islands are a series of coral atolls belonging to India. Minicoy, the most southerly of the Lakshadweep Islands, is inhabited by a thriving Muslim community and appears to be Kinduri's home.

Marine turtles are illegally hunted throughout the Lakshadweep Islands, mainly for their oil which is used to waterproof traditionally-crafted boats, but are rarely fished around Minicoy. Minicoy seamen are famous for their sailing and maritime expertise and are employed by merchant fleets all around the world. Consequently, Minicoy islanders are relatively affluent and less reliant on natural resources, such as turtle oil, than are other communities within the Lakshadweep Islands.

Minicoy has the largest lagoon of all the atolls within the system, supporting reef and seagrass communities and a foraging aggregation of green and hawksbill turtles. It appeared that Kinduri did not to use the lagoon, but alternated between spending time off the western outer shore of the atoll and out to sea south of the island.
