In 2006, Vihara Mahadevi was the only turtle to spend her inter-nesting periods in coastal seas beyond Rekawa. She repeatedly internested at Habaraduwa, and after her last nest at Rekawa she went back there and spent about one month on the fringe reefs just offshore of Habaraduwa (at the location featured in the photographs) before her tag stopped transmitting.
Although Habaraduwa's beaches are relatively heavily developed with tourist hotels and villas, green, olive ridley and leatherback turtles still nest there, as well as occasional hawksbills and loggerheads. Locals also say that large and small green and hawksbill turtles are regularly seen foraging on the fringe reefs throughout the year. Perhaps Habaraduwa is Vihara Mahadevi's home!
