Surveying leatherback
nesting beaches with the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust (MCBT)
The leatherback turtle nesting population of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands
may make up one of the most important nesting populations of this species
remaining in the Indian Ocean. With our support, researchers from the
Madras Crocodile Bank Trust (MCBT) can now continue monitoring the nesting
beaches of this remote archipelago and extend their work to previously
unsurveyed beaches to establish the actual number of nesting females.
They will also be continuing a tagging programme, which over time will
reveal more about the size and dynamics of the population. It is vital
that this sort of research is maintained for many seasons, as it is only
with time that researchers can truly begin to understand marine turtle
populations. (TCF funded from 2003 to 2004)
