Seals are amongst the most engaging animals that our shores and seas support - the sight of their inquisitive bobbing heads in the water, or the sleepy bundle of fur of a pup on the shoreline, bring joy and fascination to children and adults alike. The Common and Grey seals that inhabit the seas around the UK represent an internationally important part of the global population and it is therefore up to us to ensure their long-term future.
Seals and many other marine creatures are threatened by a rising tide of pollution from discarded fishing net and strapping
bands to toxic chemicals washed out to sea from our homes and industry. They also have to compete with our growing hunger for fish, which has resulted in the decimation of fish stocks and in some areas seals are in conflict with fish farmers,
tempted by the availability of caged salmon. Even our interest and fascination with seals can cause harm, as sightseers try to get close enough for the ultimate photograph, or just to feel close to nature.
If seals are to thrive in our seas we must take action now to protect them from the effects of pollution, over-fishing and disturbance.
There's only one charity in the UK that cares for all our seas, shores and wildlife such as seals - the Marine Conservation Society (MCS). We're passionate about the sea and all its creatures and take positive, practical action to ensure our seas are fit for life.
By supporting MCS you will help us tackle the threat posed by litter through our national Beachwatch litter survey and clean-up. You will help us to develop sustainable fisheries and fish-farming practices which operate in harmony with marine life not against it. You will also help us promote a love and appreciation of seals and all marine life, which respects their
need for space and protection from disturbance.
Please help make our seas fit for seals and for all marine life by making a donation or joining today - for just £10 you'll receive a Save Our Seals pack including a poster, factsheet and ideas for how you can help MCS ensure our seas are fit for our seals.
