The Responsible Marine Aquarist Handbook

Annually, 20 - 30 million fish and around the same number of corals, shrimps, anemones and other marine animals are collected from coral reefs for the marine aquarium trade.

MCS acknowledges that keeping a tropical marine tank can be a rewarding hobby, and that public aquaria can play an important role in increasing public awareness of the wonders of the marine world and the need for conservation. At the same time, we believe that the marine aquarium trade must be carefully and responsibly managed to ensure that it is not detrimental to the health of coral reefs or the species involved in the trade.

The Responsible Marine Aquarist Handbook is produced by MCS and packed with information to enable people to make sensible choices. A large section of the book is devoted to directory-style entries for all the different types of invertebrates and fish that are used in the hobby. There are over 150 colour photographs of the species used, and the entries include information on distribution and abundance in the wild and suitability for captivity.
